The Courtney Hollow Band starts off the 2012 Music on the Lawn series on June 14, 2012, at 6:30 pm.  (Rain date is August 16, 2012.)

The  Courtney  Hollow  Band  met  while  attending  local   bluegrass  jam  sessions  and  festivals  held  regularly  throughout   Central  Virginia  and  all  share  a  love  of  bluegrass music  traditions.
Now  Celebrating  10  years  together,  the  band  consists  of  Bill   Collins  (upright  bass,  vocals),  Troy  Gooding  (mandolin,  vocals),   Tom  Hogge  (banjo,  vocals),  and  Dan  Purdom  (guitar,  vocals).   When the band first formed, they often practiced at Bill’s house in  beautiful  Courtney  Hollow  just  outside  Madison,  VA.  They  achieved quick success and local support, playing fairs, clubs, benefit shows, and bluegrass festivals throughout the mid-Atlantic.
The  band  has  a  hard  driving,  traditional  bluegrass  sound  with excellent instrumentation and fine vocal harmonies.  Courtney Hollow  is  an  exciting,  traditional  bluegrass  band.  They  rehearse   and  perform  in  the  shadow  of  the  Blue  Ridge  Mountains,  and     are  preserving  the  wonderful  bluegrass  traditions  born  in these  mountains.

Next up in the series will be The Whiskey Rebellion on July 12, 2012, at 6:30 pm.  (Rain date is July 26, 2012.)

The  Whiskey  Rebellion  is  a  Richmond,  VA-based  band  that  plays   a  style  best  described  as  ”high-energy  acoustic  music”.  Over  the   past  eight  years,  the  award  winning  band  has  released  two  albums,  filmed a tour documentary, produced a music video that was featured  on  YouTube,  and  played  hundreds  of  shows  traveling  as  far  west as the Pacific Ocean. Original songwriting, skillful picking, and three  part  harmony  are  what  you  can  expect  from  this  band.

Drawing on the diverse musical backgrounds of its members, The Whiskey Rebellion forms a modern style of Americana that displays the  spontaneity  of  bluegrass,  the  collectiveness  of  jazz,  and  the  urgency of rock and roll. The band covers a wide array of artists,  from  Johnny  Cash  to  Jimi  Hendrix,  from  The  Grateful  Dead  to     Guns  n’  Roses,  and  from  The  Beatles  to  The  Band,  but  the  approach   is  always  deeply  rooted  in  Americana.

They  have  shared  the  stage  with  such  acts  as  The  Seldom  Scene,   The  Sam  Bush  Band,  Tony  Rice,  and  Larry  Keel  and  Natural  Bridge.

The final artist is Dan Barrale, “Sinatra Under the Stars”.  Dan will perform on September 6, 2012, at 6:30 pm.  (Rain date is September 13, 2012.)

Dan  Barrale was born in New York City in 1961, the youngest of three children.  He moved to Charlottesville in 1989 where he began working in construction before becoming self employed as a contractor, while pursuing his musical interests as a drummer first and then a singer, all while raising  a  family.

He  began  his  musical  career  at  the  age  of  six,  singing  in  his  church’s  gospel  group.  His  musical   interests include gospel, R&B, Jazz, funk, soul, Fusion – you name it, he loves it!!  Dan’s biggest musical influences include Stevie Wonder; Chicago; Blood, Sweat & Tears; and Sammy Davis, Jr. (just  to  name  a  few).  As  his  talents  and  voice  matured,  he  performed  mostly  as  a  vocalist,  singing Jazz, Big Band, Blues and Gospel – but he is best known for his Sinatra stylings.

He  has  performed  as  a  vocalist  in  venues  such  as  the  Kennedy  Center  in  Washington,  DC;  The Breakers in Palm Beach;  The Bellagio in Las Vegas;  as well as at hundreds of weddings and corporate  events.

Dan  currently  resides  in  Richmond  with  his  girlfriend  and  four  cats,  and  is  pursuing  his  dream of  a  full-time  musical  career.

Wow, summer is upon us. We are a little late getting our bands lined up for this year’s Music on the Lawn. I have been waiting on one band to reply, hoping to hear this week on that one. We will NOT be having any of the concerts at the high school. We will have a rain date, if it rains on the rain date, concert will be cancelled. We may have one in early September. The other two for the year will be: July 21 – Scuffletown, with a rain date of Aug. 4. August 18 – Big Ray & The Kool Kats, with a rain date of August 25. I hope to be posting a third concert very soon.
